We have already been introduced to the Biofloc fish farming technology, hence we are going to move ahead and discuss the advantages of this relatively new aquaculture technique.
Advantages of Biofloc technology
- It is an eco-friendly fish culture technique.
- Biofloc technology improves land usage efficiency.
- Biofloc technology required zero or negligible water exchange.
- It greatly reduces the negative impact on the environment.
- Productivity of fishes using biofloc technology is comparatively higher.
- It reduces the cost of standard fish feed.
- Security is higher as compared to traditional fish farming methods.
- During harvest the water can be used as liquid fertiliser.
Brief explanation of the advantages of Biofloc technology:
1. It is an eco-friendly fish culture technique:
Since the biofloc technique is like a closed environment hence there is very less chance of introduction or spread of pathogens into the culture tank. There is also almost zero chances of leakage of harmful compounds that may affect the environment negatively. Hence, it is totally pollution free.
2. Biofloc technology improves land usage efficiency:
Traditionally, fishes were cultivated in large scale ponds and lakes, which required a larger area of land where these water bodies existed, whereas, biofloc fish tanks are comparatively way smaller hence requiring lesser area of land. People of India and Bangladesh have constructed biofloc tanks inside their house premises, which is a testament to the point.
3. Biofloc technology required zero or negligible water exchange:
The main objective behind this Biofloc technology was to minimize or nullify the need for routine water exchange because it is not possible and not very economic. Using this technique, the water is maintained free of toxic compounds so the water is fresh and free from all toxin buildup. Hence, there is almost zero water exchange if you are using biofloc fish farming technology.
4. It greatly reduces the negative impact of the environment:
Biofloc fish farming technology prevents water pollution, and environment pollution due to release of toxic materials into the environment. So, negative impact on the environment is reduced.
5. Productivity of fishes using biofloc technology is comparatively higher:
Biofloc fish farming technology is dedicated mainly to keep the water in the culture tank clean and free from all toxins. Therefore, it prevents the negative effects on the fishes due to toxin buildup, increasing the survival rate of the fishes and diminishing the mortality rate of the organism. Moreover, this is very closely observed and maintained by the fish farmers, so manual intervention also helps in increasing the size of the fishes without the use of chemicals growth boosters.
6. It reduces the cost of standard fish feed:
The principle of this technique is the usage of heterotrophic microbes which convert the nitrogenous waste into a secondary food source for the organisms. This secondary food source is protein-rich and is greatly used by the organisms, thereby reducing the dependence on the primary food source, which is beneficial to the fish farmer because it reduces the investment required for the fish feed for one complete harvest.
7. Security is higher as compared to traditional fish farming methods:
Biofloc tanks are smaller in size as compared to the ponds and lakes where fishes used to be cultivated. This is beneficial for fish farmers because these tanks require very small area of land, hence they can be constructed anywhere, as I've explained before in the second point. The other benefit of this is that they can be guarder very easily, so there's absolutely no chance of fishes being stolen by other farmers. Therefore it is secure than traditional fish farming techniques.
8. During harvest the water can be used as liquid fertiliser:
When harvesting is done, the water in the tank is pumped out. This water can be used to irrigation purposes mainly because its is free from the stench of fishes and it is full of nutrients required by a plant. Hence, the water aids in agriculture by acting as a liquid fertiliser.
Those are the benefits of biofloc fish farming technology which must be read by aspiring fish farmers so that they themselves understand how a little bit of technology can increase the landscape of agriculture to such an extent.
That's all for today, we'll see you again later.
